Estimate: £600 - £800
Excellent condition and bouquet. A rare and historically important Joshua Brown box from the 1920's/1930's, in remarkably clean and excellent condition for its age. Joshua Brown's routes go back as early as 1871 to their operations to include a tobacco factory in Long Acre, Nottingham. By the 1920's Joshua's son, Ernst Vincent Brown where we believe this box originates took over and managed the enterprise. Through the passage of time Joshua Brown were known as a significant manufacturer, importer and distributor for high-end Cuban cigars in the U.K. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with multiple retail locations throughout the East Midlands of Great Britain. What makes this box fascinating, historically important and rare was during this time Joshua Brown served as the sole official English agency for Por Larranaga factory in Havana, Cuba, once hailed the most respected tobacco factory in all of Cuba. In addition, they were instrumental in establishing Por Larranaga as a premium brand in the British market. We believe this box was made by Por Larranaga, and marketed as Joshua Brown (JB) - El Pedro De Luxe as Half Coronas and alas we have not seen another which makes it very rare indeed.
